Republican Presidential Candidates Discuss Manufacturing at Iowa Forum

AWB Institute’s national partner the Manufacturing Institute and their parent organization the National Association of Manufacturers hosted a forum featuring a majority of the 2012 Republican Presidential Candidates from the facilities of Vermeer Corporation in Pella, Iowa. The Nov. 1 forum was moderated by Iowa Governor Terry Brandstad and Iowa PBS Financial News Anchor, Tom Hudson.

Not all of the Republican candidates participated in the forum. Those who were present included; Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, Texas Gov. Perry and former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Penn.

Unlike a debate format where candidates are asked questions in a group setting allowing for comment and rebuttal, the moderators spoke with each candidate separately questioning them on the issues most important to manufacturers. Some questions were also taken from audience members.

The range of questions included health care and associated costs, current tax rates and incentives for R&D and exporting, energy , workforce development, and government regulation. One particular theme, that of the “government picking winners and losers” with regard to policy in areas such as health care and energy was identified by all of the candidates.

The forum was broadcast live on Iowa PBS and streamed on the internet. It was also rebroadcast in most of the country on the PBS World Chanel. None of the PBS stations in Washington aired the program. It can be seen in its entirety online:
