Seven business-minded high school, college students earn awards
OLYMPIA
– Despite tough economic times, area high school and college students
are pursuing their interests in business thanks to scholarship awards
from the Association of Washington Business.
In a break with
tradition, seven students were awarded a Don C. Brunell Scholarship for
Future Leaders. Previously, the cash award has been given to just one
student. This year’s recipients are: Kathleen Garrow of Tacoma (Pacific
Lutheran University), Morganne Hatfield of Sammamish (Skyline High
School), Joshua Klatman of Port Orchard (South Kitsap High School),
Andrew Millikan of Milwaukie, Ore. (Clackamas Community College),
Andrew Perun of Sammamish (Michigan State University), Sidney Voorhees
of Olympia (Olympia High School), and Danielle Rants of Olympia
(Olympia High School).
Named for AWB’s long-time President Don
Brunell, the annual scholarship was established and funded by AWB’s
board of directors to inspire and aid Washington’s future business
leaders. The award is targeted to undergraduate or career/vocational
students currently pursuing or who intend to pursue a course of
education that will lead to a degree or certification in business from
any public or private university, community or technical college, or
private career school.
“Washington’s future rests on the young
people we see in our high schools, community colleges, technical
schools and universities. This award is our chance to support those
students who show an early interest in business and inspire them to
pursue their career goals,” said Brunell.
“The seven students
selected for this award reflect the enthusiasm and creativity we need
to solve today’s challenges and keep Washington a good place to do
business.”
Future Leaders Scholarships are awarded to students
based on academic criteria as well as short essay responses on the
topics of leadership, career or vocational plans, previous work or
community service, and the reason they have chosen to pursue a career
in business. Applicants may also receive bonus credit for having
attended Washington Business Week.
About the Association of Washington Business
Formed
in 1904, the Association of Washington Business is Washington’s oldest
and largest statewide business association, and includes more than
6,500 members representing 650,000 employees. AWB serves as both the
state’s chamber of commerce and the manufacturing and technology
association. While its membership includes major employers like Boeing,
Microsoft and Weyerhaeuser, 90 percent of AWB members employ fewer than
100 people. More than half of AWB’s members employ fewer than 10. For
